Inspiration Corner
Needing someone is like needing a parachute. If they are not there the first time you need
them, chances are you won't be needing them again.

The Next Wireless
It's been a while since we saw a significant change in the wireless connection landscape. The next big thing is available now, but it's in the chicken-and-egg phase of deployment. You'll soon start seeing wireless USB connectivity. This will become the replacement for Bluetooth if it gets adopted widely enough. Wireless USB has the same 10 meter range limitation as Bluetooth but it has a maximum data rate that is more than 600 times faster (480 MBPS vs 721 KBPS). It's probably going to need a cool name to succeed because Wireless USB is just confusing.
Here's why you will like it. Imagine bringing your digital camera (or mp3 player, external hard drive, printer, etc.) within 30 feet of your computer and having the computer recognize it and start transferring files. Wireless USB will allow this. You can get rid of all of those funny USB cables with various sized connectors.

When Backup Isn't Enough
The state-of-the-art in data backup hadn't changed much in more than a decade until recently. Sure, there were debates about the best tape rotation scheme, and whether or not one big tape drive was better than smaller tape drives on each server, but the technology was fixed. It was some form of data tape. Today, the tape drive is still the best option but that may not last long. Two new ideas are starting to make their way to the affordable marketplace. Online backup gets the most press because it seems sexier. Continuous Data Protection (CDP) is the one that really has the potential to make a difference in business operations.
Online backup provides a way to get your data backed up to a remote system at another location. It keeps you from having to move tapes from the office to home (or other location) and swapping them in and out of the server every day. The limitations of online backup was one of time. There isn't enough time during the night to transfer a full backup over a typical office Internet connection. This problem was solved by cheaper bandwidth and by a trick called block level monitoring. Using this technique, only the smallest changes are transmitted across the Internet rather than the full data set. Unlike incremental tape backups though, with block level changes, the remote server incorporates the changes to create a duplicate of your server from an initial complete backup. It's this block level trick that gives you CDP.
